A George 111 period red leather clad document or despatch box, the lid gold stamped with the coronet of an earl, the front stamped with a pair of gold crowns above the Royal Cypher "GR". A heavy brass drop carrying handle is mounted in the centre of the bevelled lid, and the box is secured by a Chubb lock, numbered London 11859, and stamped with the Royal Crown above the name "Chubbs", "Patent". The brass diamond shaped escutcheon has the words Chubb Patent stamped between two crowns. A pair of replacement keys are supplied. The initial J can be discerned under the dark red panel in the top front of the lid. The green velvet & marbled paper interior is original, and is in untouched condition.
