Measuring just 7" x 5" x 5" (17.75 x 12.5 x 12.5 cms), this Miniature Cast Iron Safe, with painted decoration, by R. Thompson won the Special Award in 1888 at THE PEOPLE'S PALACE WORKMAN'S INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION in Glasgow, the bronze medallion for which is included (please see the images). The complex 12 point locking mechanism inside the door can be seen when the internal cover is opened. Inside the safe are two drawers and two cupboards, each with its own separate key. The sliding brass escutcheon is engraved '1884 R. THOMPSON'.
The safe & medallion was the property of Alfred Langton Markham (1923-2015), who was the Managing Director of Chubb Locks. He acquired them when the Chubb Museum was dispersed in the last century.
