An Edwardian Pebble Grained Leather Clad Despatch Box with top handle, The title INDIA OFFICE appears above King Edward VII's Crown and royal insignia. The name of the original owner,  Sir W. Lee Warner* is present on the forward bevel. The box opens to reveal a black leather interior full width hinge with quadrant stays, raised side panels and locating studs. The Bramah Patent click-lock comes complete with key.

*Sir William Lee-Warner GCSI (18 April 1846 – 18 January 1914) was a British author and colonial administrator in the Indian Civil Service. He was Chief Commissioner of Coorg in 1895. In 1907 he headed the eponymous Lee Warner Committee that examined Indians receiving education in Britain.

In 1895, Lord George Hamilton requested Lee-Warner return to England to serve as Secretary of the Political and Secret Department at the India Office. He was appointed to the Secretary of State's Council of India in October 1902 serving until 1910.
