A Exceptionally fine Victorian Green Pebble Grained Leather Writing & Jewellery Box, the chamfered top with a central recessed handle and decorated with deeply embossed & gilded line & scroll work, the sides framed with three rows of gilt lines.
The box opens to reveal the writing slope and the blotting book, both with gilt impressed borders and spandrels. The blotter is lifted to reveal two fitted jewellery trays and a deep compartment below divided into compartments. All lifting tabs are present and in good condition.The upper tray houses a leather covered inkwell bearing the name of its maker Smith Elder & Co.Cornhill. The writing slope is hinged and secured by a clever rotating latch, with a compartment for papers & documents inside. The elastic lattice work for cards & memoranda is original and in good condition. All of the interior sections retain the original grained leather lining..
The working lock retains its key and is stamped Bramah London.
