The Bramah lock has been customised using Asprey's Patent design so that the box can be locked without a key just by pressing downwards on the lid. Normally you would need to open it with the key therefore the key must never be left inside the box. Asprey's Patent customisation allows you to unlock the box by sliding the lock front across to the right. The spring loaded mechanism then automatically returns the lock to its closed position once the top is lifted. The purpose of the key is to lock the spring-loaded front aperture mechanism. In this state the box is deadlocked and can only be unlocked by using the key.
