A Red Leather Despatch Box, the bevelled top, with a central brass swing handle, bearing the Royal Insignia of William IV on a black ground, with 'signature' stamped above the initials F.D. The Royal Insignia also appears twice on the front of the box, as well as on each side. The back is stamped 'FOREIGN OFFICE' with the date 1834. Inside, the box retains the original green velvet lining and features raised sides, stabilising studs and screwless hinges. The lock has been restored and a period key supplied.
