A small Early Black Leather Despatch Box C 1845 stamped with the early insignia and crown of Queen Victoria and THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF*' in gold lettering, the interior lined with green velvet.
The lock has been replaced at some time in its history, and the ring handle may be an addition.
*The Commander in Chief was the head of the British Army, and the position was held by Arthur Wellesley, The First Duke of Wellington, the Victor of Waterloo, who served two terms as Prime Minister of England, until his death in 1852. He was succeeded as Commander in Chief by Prince George, Duke of Cambridge until his death in 1895.
