A very fine mid Victorian Burr Walnut Writing Box, ebony edged, the lid with a recessed brass shield engraved with the initials S.W. above the date 1863, and with an engraved belt motif below. Under the top flap the satinwood interior is fitted with a panel with a secret release, behind which are three satinwood velvet lined drawers with coromandel fronts. There is further storage for papers below the lower flap.
The maker's label appears on the inside of the panel covering the secret drawers.
The Bramah patent lock is stamped S. Mordan & Co. London, and is in good working order with its original key.
